The Power of Coaching
Coaching is a creative and thought-provoking partnership with clients that inspires them to live up to their full personal and professional potential.
Coaches are trained to listen, to observe, and to customize their approach to individual client needs. The coach’s job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has, and elicit solutions and strategies from the client, rather than providing them.
In ongoing relationships, our coaches help clients produce fulfilling results, improving their performance and enhancing the quality of their lives.
What exactly do coaches do?
Coaches assist clients to:
- Identify goals and achieve them
- Develop self-observation skills so they can make new choices that are unavailable to them otherwise
- Reframe beliefs so they are consistent with goals.
How does coaching differ from therapy, consulting, sports coaching, mentoring or having a supportive friend?
- Coaching is not therapy. Therapy seeks to bring awareness and understanding of the past to a client; coaching provides support and strategy to make changes based on their awareness of the present, and their commitments for the future. Therapy deals with what was broken, and how to fix it; coaching deals with how clients can go from “functional” to “extraordinary.”
- Coaching is not consulting. Consulting brings to bear “best practices” and subject-matter knowledge on the client’s situation. Consultants provides solutions to specific problems and often dispense advice. Coaches, on the other hand, assume that the client has the answers, and focuses on “right questions” to elicit solutions from the client.
A coach is a committed, on-going partner assisting clients to implement new skills, practices, thinking and language that is consistent with their declared future possibilities.
- Coaching is not mentoring. Mentors seek to provide guidance and solutions to clients based on their own experiences. Coaching helps clients apply their own experiences and wisdom to their situations and develop solutions for themselves.
- Coaching employs several principles from sports coaching—for example, teamwork, and monitoring and exceeding performance in order to be one’s best. However, unlike sports coaching, the desired results of coaching is not “win or lose.” Coaches focus instead on sustainability of practices, language, ways of being and thinking that produce intended results
- While supportive friends are wonderful, they can seldom provide the objectivity and distance that a coach will. A coach offers a more objective and less personal perspective and a more rigorous commitment to the client’s success.
Who hires a coach?
- Corporations, for coaching related to:
- Organizations/teams
- Leaderships and executives
- Small businesses and entrepreneurs
- Individuals, for coaching related to:
- Relationships
- Career and transitions
- Lifestyle
- Fitness and health
- Finance and wealth
- Meaning and spirituality
Coaches are hired by corporations and individuals because they want:
- Greater satisfaction, balance and peace of mind, more money and better relationships.
- To grow in all aspects of their lives and be more productive.
- To discover innovative ways to do things effortlessly.
Does the coach work on personal goals, or on business/professional goals?
Both. Coaching inevitably works with aspects of a client’s personal, business, and professional goals.
What is the focus of coaching?
Coaches focus on what their clients need most. Questions a coach might help a client address include:
- What are your goals? Are they based in your values?
- Where are you now in relation to where you want to be?
- In order to get what you want from any situation, what are your areas of strength and what are your areas for improvement and focus?
Coaches help their clients maintain focus on their desired commitments and taking actions which will have them succeed.
Why does coaching work?
Coaching creates synergy between the coach and client which in turn, creates momentum. A focus of coaching is for the client to have well-defined goals and move forward on them quickly. In addition, the client develops new language, practices and actions, which translate into a more successful and balanced life.
Why is coaching becoming so popular?
- Many people are tired of doing what they think they “should” do and are ready to do what they want to do.
- Through friends who have experienced it and storied in the media, people are learning that coaching can help them to accomplish goals that previously seemed out of reach.
- More people are investing in themselves, spending the time and resources to accomplish long-held dreams.
- People are seeking deeper meaning in their lives and work.
- Companies are seeking innovative ways to grow themselves from the inside out, so that their goals and their employees’ goals can be reached.
The Coaching Relationship
Coaches offer a confidential environment focused on the client’s objectives and success. Coaching is a guided process designed to unlock the client’s potential and maximize his or her performance. Coaches help business owners, executives and individuals clarify their direction, realize what they can’t see, create time and space in their lives for the things they believe are most important and take effective action.
An effective coaching partnership produces excellent, sustainable performance as well as fulfillment. A primary goal of YESS! coaches is to support clients to become self-generating and self-correcting so their growth continues long past the coach/client relationship.
From a committed relationship with a YESS! certified coach, clients can expect to:
- Continuously expand personal and professional capacity to learn and perform
- Unleash aspirations, move beyond current knowledge and understanding, and maximize results
- Sculpt new patterns of relationships and interactions that result in creative and innovative solutions
- Move through “blind spots” and into the client’s own definition of success
Coaching is about mastering change. Change requires that clients break with habits that have served them well to reach their current level of performance in order to create an unprecedented or previously “impossible” future.
